HDTV for Movies: Sharp and Comfortable

By John Terry Santiago

HDTV, is anyone familiar with that name? In recent years we know that there was some advancement of technology that happened in the world. The television technology was using more, and more sophisticated technology has been invented. The colored television, digital channels, international television, satellite TV and so on. But today, there is a new invention on the television business that is known as the name of HDTV. This invention gives people a higher resolution and higher quality of television. The High Quality Definition Television is a new found invention in the TV business.

The HDTV is invented to fulfill the demands of the TV consumers for a better quality video and better image. The ability to record high definition video has been known since years before, but the ability on showing high definition video on TV is just recently invented. This technology is similar with the 35mm video format. The 35mm camera has been known to be the best video recorder, and the only thing that could support the video format this camera is making is the theater. The theater needs the best video format because they are using a larger screen, so that the better the video format is, the better it can be seen on the screen. The TV doesn't need this kind of video format because it will only be waste on looking the high definition video format in a small TV.

In the United States, this technology was introduced for the first time in the 1990s by the Digital HDTV Grand Alliance. The Digital HDTV Grand Alliance is a name of a group of television companies. There was a testing field that used to test the product at about 199 sites in the United States was completed in August 14th, 1994. On July 23rd, 1996, the first public HDTV broadcast in the United States was occurred. Then, in October 29th, 1998, the American Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) HDTV systems had been launched.

When you are dealing with HDTV video, maybe you often hear people discussing the characteristic and the quality of the video by using certain measurements. In this technology, there are three measurement properties that are used. The first one the frame size of which the measurement unit is recognized as pixels. Two dimensions of pixels are used there: the horizontal pixels and the vertical pixels. So, if you find a HDTV with A x B pixels, with each A and B is a certain number, it means that those video has A horizontal pixels and B vertical pixels. The second property is the frame rate, which its measurement unit is stated as video frames per second. And, the last property is the scanning system. The scanning system tells us how the video was scanned. To state the scanning system, the letter p or i is used. The letter p tells that the video was scanned using progressive scanning, while the letter i is used to mark that the video is scanned using interlaced scanning.

Besides the advantages above, there are also some disadvantages using this technology. The first is DVI Compatibility require a separate sound audio which carries video signals only. Therefore, you need a HDMI-DVI connector. Another disadvantage in using it is the multi-channel audio which can not transmit the multi channel and the standard two channel stereo signal at the same time. Therefore, now is your choice to use them or not. One thing for sure, HDTV has more advantages rather that the disadvantages.
